This article is interesting about thoughts of using flying networks to support military operations.

It is a complex system - and my sense is that they will screw it up with application specific protocols and APIs that evolve and change over time as as military events (the kind that go boom or are intentional forms of in-band attacks - think everything from hyper-phishing to spoofing to zero-day attacks).

But even if it were put together with the precision of a Swiss watch, my old bugbear of keeping it running - noticing problems, diagnosing and isolating them, and deploying repairs - is likely to be under-considered, or not really considered at all.

More on Alexa+ - When I'm build up a new computer (which I often do several times a day) I begin in the BIOS by setting the time to GMT.

So I usually say "Alexa what's the GMT?"

Old Alexa would promptly give me an answer.

New Alexa+ takes about five seconds of deep (and probably power consuming) thinking and then tells me the meaning of GMT.

Then I yell that I want the time in GMT and, after that five second pause, tells me the GMT time (but not the date, which is often, for me, tomorrow.)

On another front, when I asked Alexa+ for the opening hours of our local bagel store it responded with the location of bagel places in Atlantic city - 3000 miles from me - and then on retry ones in Las Vegas - 700 miles from me.

Well, now that it has happened we can all know, based on actual concrete proof, that not a single person in the US military hierarchy obeys the law that requires the refusal of unlawful/unconstitutional orders.

We have transitioned from a military under Constitutional and statutory limitations to a military that is a Republican Guard, or in older terms, a Praetorian Guard.

If we ever do, if ever, return to a nation of laws then every person in the entire military hierarchy is going to have to be charged and disciplined - because no one, not a one, even questioned, much less refused, the unlawful/unconstitutional orders to go to war with Iran.

I needed to build up our inventory of parts to build our network testing products.

So I discover:

1. The Chinese vendor who makes the motherboards has stopped shipping to the US.

2. The memory I need - pretty basic 16gb DDR 4 and 5 SODIMS - unavailable or more than quadrupled in price.

3. M.2 NVME SSDs - unavailable or much higher prices.

F**k those AI companies especially the one that bought all those memory wafers it can't use just to block its competition.

There is a risk, a real risk, that because of California's "jungle" primary system that there could be no D candidate - yes, no D candidate at all - on the November ballot to replace the term-limited Gavin Newsom.

The D's need to focus - some D candidates need to drop out so that the primary vote is not split and thus allow the two top R's to take the two spots on the November general election ballot.

I've done several startups. We had to obey various restrictions about making sure that certain kinds of options and founders securities were available only to those who had $1million+ net worth.

This rule annoyed a lot of people, but it is there for a good reason: Doing startups is risky and the rules help protect people who don't have the resources to absorb a failure. (And some of our startups did fail.)

Same for some investments - there are a lot of scammy offers out there. I've even fallen for some (like a REIT that declared arbitrary dividends to make it sound like it was generating great returns, but those "dividends" were required to be re-invested, thus leaving the same assets as before, but carved into more, but smaller shares, of which I had the same portion - net gain: zero.)

So I think these protective rules make sense, as would be a rule that requires sellers of these things to be obligated to fiduciary responsibilities to the potential buyers.

It is pretty clear that ICE/DHS are intentionally trying to elicit a violent, possibly armed, response to these violent acts. The ICE-gang is desiring this because then el cheato will invoke the insurrection act. That will, in turn, open the gates for the goons to really start breaking heads and for blood to flow in the streets. My guess is that some ICE goon, somewhere, is going to get shot by a sniper or protester within a month, if not sooner. I expect February to begin a true rain of maga terror. @augieray@mastodon.social ICANN's UDRP (their method through which trademark holders can take away domain names that they don't like) was written by and for the trademark protection industry. I know - I am an IP lawyer and I was there when ICANN wrote and deployed that awful, biased process. Fortunately, although an uphill (and not $ free) fight, the UDRP process has evolved enough to recognize that not all similar uses of a name are subject to trademark based cancellation.

@mattblaze@federate.social In my mind one of the most interesting comparisons is that of the Golden Gate bridge as built versus what was originally proposed. Both designs were "functional". But the original design by Strauss was a visual disaster while the as-built by Charles Ellis is a world-class gem. (Strauss was so jealous of Ellis that Ellis name was not to be found on the name plaque on the south tower - I don't know if his name was ever added later.) Below is the original design, yuck. The items obtained by the media
The items collected by a House committee (which is what the “the vote” would cover)
The items collected by the so-called “Justice” Department, which are under Blondie Bondi’s control (and thus presumably under El Cheato’s control.)
