A local diner had been in business about 30 years. Long time employees, long time regular diners.

Then the owner wanted to retire and sold it.

Long-time employees started vanishing. New employees seemed to only stay a few weeks. Their main cook left and a bunch of regulars left with her. A waitress whispered to me that it’s not a nice place to work. So I stopped going.

Now it’s closed with a help wanted sign, too understaffed to open.

Treat your employees well, or else.

Something that struck me on my first viewing of KPop Demon Hunters (yes this is the only topic I think about now) is what the movie *didn't* have:

• Nobody skeezed out over the trio
• They weren't sexualized
• They weren't relegated as the foils to male silliness. They got to be silly and funny themselves.
• There's never any "pretty good, for a girl" or "you lost to a girl" stuff, even from the bad guys
• Their manager wasn't the usual exploitive, money-hungry stereotype

Imagine two identical satellite data centers powered solely by onboard solar panels. They’re hooked up to some GPUs to run a lying plagiarism machine, and there are heat sinks to radiate the GPU heat away as IR.

If one of the satellites has its GPUs turned on and the other off, does the one that’s on radiate more heat?

As a long-time Java developer, it's nice having a meaty little project to learn Kotlin with. Tons of great improvements and less verbose code.

But soooo many wtf decisions.

Like I really can't compare a byte value to a `0` literal without `0.toByte()`? REALLY?? The parser absolutely CANNOT figure out that unsolvable ambiguity? Truly the greatest unsolved NP-hard problem in CS!

I think what bothers me so much about the constant reboots and remakes of things from decades past is what a bleak statement it makes about the future.

It says there is little that is exciting, interesting, or novel ahead to look forward to, no new ideas we’re eager to explore. Go back and scavenge every last scrap of the past, back before the goodness was depleted.

Such a depressing outlook.

A thing I don’t get about AI scrapers hammering servers is that scraping the entire web is not a new problem! It’s a very, very solved problem by every search engine. So why are their scrapers such crap? Even if they’re ignoring robots.txt, it shouldn’t account for this much extra traffic.

for like 5 minutes

and then it very quickly devolved into "4chan fascists wanting state-mandated gfs" versus "cry more, you entitled misogynist pieces of shit."

And [sigh] I mean yeah, fight those hateful freaks for sure. But if you're a guy who's an ardent feminist, who tries to recognize your privilege, and isn't demanding anyone solve your problems but does struggle, it can make you feel, well... lonely.
